108 Assessment Mat & Playbook

Find the position before you coach the movement.

The 108 Performance Assessment Mat is the first thing a player does when they walk into our shop — before a single swing or throw gets coached. It gives you a repeatable way to find a player's best landing position in the batter's box or on the mound: stride angle, width of base, and distance from the plate or side of the rubber.

Why position comes first

Players spend seasons trying to change a swing or a delivery when the real issue is that they were in a poor position to swing or throw in the first place. A bad position forces the body to compensate just to complete the task — and then that compensation is what you end up coaching.

Fix the position and the mechanics usually clean up on their own. No extra cueing, no new drill.

A position you can write down

The mat is a coordinate system, not just a reference line. Numbered rays fan out from a single origin point to capture stride angle. Lettered tick marks along each ray capture stride distance. Two quadrant boxes let you code foot placement the same way every rep.

So a landing position stops being a feel or a guess and becomes a reading — one you can record, hand to another coach, and check again six weeks later. Same notation, same setup, every session. That consistency is what lets you tell a real change from a bad day.

Where and when to use it

In the cage and in the bullpen. Best used during first-time assessments and then regularly through training and practice.

• Hitting: tee work, front toss, BP in the cage, BP on the field
• Throwing: plyo drills, catch play, bullpens

Orientation

The 108 logo always goes at the front of the mat, pointing toward your target — between the player's body and whatever they're hitting or throwing to. Set it the same way every time and the readings stay comparable session to session.
